The statement that the gap between rich and poor is increasing is poppycock. The average South African household income has risen from R2435 in 1994 to R6537 per month.

This is a staggering 264% and nearly 20% increase per year. And low and behold it is not the super rich that are pulling the averages up, it is the middle segment LSM 5 to LSM 9 that has increased.

In fact the percentage of the population in the LSM 1 -4 segment has decreased with a whopping 32% since 2001. This is a spectacular narrowing of the gap between rich and poor.

LSM 4 has increased but the significant drop is in the LSM 1-3 segments while LSM 10 has remained the same. 78% of the population are in the LSM 4- 10 groups, and 22% in the LSM 1-3 group. In 1993 the LSM 1-3 group represented over 40% of the population.

The other MP tipped for the job of Caretaker President is ANC deputy prez Kgalema Mothlante, his track record is a bit better:

In February 2006, auditors revealed that a total of about R2 billion in loans by the Land Bank, a government institution established to help farmers, had gone sour. Earlier, a R800 million (about $112 million) 10 year loan was given to Pamodzi Investment Holdings, a company whose shareholders include Motlanthe. This amounted to nearly one-third of the Land Bank's total assets, and was a non-agricultural investment. There is no suggestion that this particular loan was non-performing. Pamodzi chief executive Ndaba Ntsele denies there was any wrongdoing. The government has since fired the Land Bank chairman and agreed to inject R700 million to keep the Land Bank operative.

Baleka Mbete for President?

Chances are that Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete will be announced to stand in as caretaker President until the next election, here's a taste of her track record:

Mbete is a shareholder in Dyambu Holdings which is involved in building the massive Gautrain public transport project in the province Gauteng. Dyambu Holdings is reported to have had links with murdered magnate Brett Kebble.

In April 1997, Mbete was found to have received an improperly issued driver's license but not charged with any wrongdoing. This after investigators uncover widespread corruption in Mpumalanga regional driving license testing centers, where licenses are being issued in exchange for bribes. Mbete said that she had been "too busy" to stand in queues.

In 2007, Mbete suspended DA member Mike Waters after he attempted to ask what was being done about the Manto Tshabalala-Msimang scandal. Waters had asked about a reported conviction for theft of the Minister of Health, while the latter had been a nurse in Botswana.

Mbete was one of more than 200 South African parliamentarians found to have misused subsidised travel privileges in the Travelgate scandal. She is reported to have paid back all moneys due in the liquidation of the travel agency former providing services to parliament.

In 2006, Mbete chartered a jet at a cost of R471 900 (around US$60 000) to fly to Liberia for the inauguration of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as president. The only other passenger on the plane was a member of her staff. Then president Thabo Mbeki and foreign minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma also travelled to the inauguration - Mbeki in his private plane and Dlamini-Zuma by commercial flight.

She has been a staunch supporter of Tony Yengeni, a former ANC Chief Whip in parliament, who was convicted of defrauding parliament in 2004, even accompanying Yengeni to Pollsmoor Prison when he reported to serve his sentence.

If the ANC is going to use the corruption card to redeploy Thabo Mbeki, not casting it's gaze inwards without prejudice is inexcusable.

Moody Rock n' Roll that's as relevant in the South as it is in Oxford and Africa.

The Kings new album 'Only By the Night' is set for release in the States next week. Here's the first single, 'Sex on Fire':

Controversial Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds could be in more hot water after felling a streaker with a fearsome shoulder charge in today's tri-series match in Brisbane.

Under the International Cricket Council Code of Conduct, any physical assault on a spectator or any act of violence during play is a level four offence, which can carry a ban of 10 or more one-day matches.

Symonds is likely to argue that the streaker veered in his direction and his lunge was made in an act of self-preservation.

But despite their unreal feel, all of his images have been created by carefully controlling the optical techniques of his camera and haven't been digitally altered or distorted after shooting.

Strictly Come Dancing winner Hip Hop Pantsula is having the time of his life. HHP has just been selected to shoot a new music video with the internationally acclaimed director Nick Quested and the leggy R&B sensation Amerie.

The Setswana rapper, who was nominated for numerous awards this year, including an MTV Europe Music Award for Best Africa Act, was selected by thousands of South African music fans who were asked to vote for their favourite artist as part of MTV’s Making the Video with Shell initiative.

HHP, who was yesterday in the studio finalising his latest album, Acceptance Speech, is over the moon about shooting the video for his new track, Music N Lights, later this week in Johannesburg.

Quested, who has made close to 100 music videos for A-list stars including P Diddy, Nas, Common, Sting and Brandy, will be assisted on the shoot by South African music video directors.

Amerie, who was nominated for two Grammys last year for Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best Contemporary R&B Album, will make a cameo appearance in the video.

American Amerie is best known for her upbeat R&B tracks such as Why Don’t We Fall in Love? and recent chart successes such as Take, Gotta Work, 1 Thing and Touch.

Hip Hop Pantsula, who topped charts with his previous albums O Mang, O Mang Reloaded and YBA 2NY, said: “Nick Quested has worked with so many of my idols. It’s a fantastic opportunity to work with him to realise my vision.

“And the chance to have a star like Amerie appear in one of my videos is just a dream come true.”

The video will premier across Africa on December 7 on MTV.

Two Cows and Two Goats found in Fiat Uno!!

Police in South Africa impounded a Fiat Uno car that was being used to transport two cows and two goats.

Two policemen in northern KwaZulu-Natal chased after the tiny car after a tip-off, reports Independent Online.

Police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said residents of the Phelindaba area reported seeing a man loading a cow into the Fiat.

By the time the two officers arrived, the driver had loaded his vehicle with all four animals and was attempting to speed away.

Police gave chase and, realising he was not losing his pursuers, the man stopped his car and fled into the bushes.

The animals were later handed over to the Hluhluwe Stock Theft Unit, but the driver is still at large.

I find it amazing how the local media and it's pessimistic readers latch on to any negative news, however, when the news is positive it gets scant coverage on page 57 of Happy Knitting Weekly.
Here is an article you won't see on the front page of any newspaper this week:

Fifa ended its three-day inspection tour of South Africa on Wednesday praising the progress made in building the stadiums that will be used for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The governing body of world soccer, joined by South African organisers, visited four of the nine host cities to assess the stadiums in Johannesburg, the site of the opening and final match, as well as Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

The delegation also received progress reports on accommodation, finance and transport.

"We were able to see signs of huge transformation in the host cities. The task ahead is a big one and we admire the ambition and efforts in the host cities to make 2010 a successful event," said Alain Leiblang, Fifa's head of media.

There have been concerns about the country's high crime rate and poor transport system, as well as the pace of stadium construction.

"We are quite happy that the programme is on track. What we set out to do with this inspection tour, we achieved," local organising committee representative Dennis Mumble said in a statement.

"There are challenges and adjustments that need to be made, but that's the reason for tours such as this, to address those."

The full evaluation report will be presented at a meeting on Tuesday. - Sapa-AP

Radiohead: Indie Heroes!!

Radiohead have always been a band ahead of their time.
Now, in an unprecedented move, the band, now signed to an independent label, have decided to offer their new album to fans for whatever the fans think it is worth.

This is a move with huge consequences for the industry and possibly politically too.
Major record labels' paranoia about music piracy has been based on the assumption that people would rather steal than buy music. Hence the slogan: "giving away the contents of a record to other people has the same effect as stealing from a story without paying for it" found on EMI records (Radiohead's former parent company.)

The band have set up an online shop where anyone can buy their new album "In Rainbows" for however much they think it is worth. If the notion that between their fans and the band there exists an ideal of collateral and trust, not only will it be a slap in the face of the Capitalist greed that is as evident in the music industry as anywere else, but it might just also make Radiohead the most influential band of our time, a title I believe they have fully deserved ever since "Pablo Honey".

This weekend was a sad one for Motorsport, on Saturday, the greatest Rally driver of all time, Colin Mcrae and his 5 year old son Johnny were tragically killed in a helicopter accident.

STATEMENT ISSUED ON BEHALF OF COLIN McRAE’S FAMILY:

Speaking on behalf of the whole family, Colin’s father, Jim McRae, said today:

“It is with much sadness and regret that we have to make this statement.

It is unbelievable that Colin and Johnny’s lives have been taken so prematurely and in such a tragic manner.

Colin was a great son, a loving husband to Alison and a fantastic father to Johnny and his big sister Hollie. Johnny was a great wee guy, spending every spare minute with his dad, and even at this early stage it looked like he had the potential to carry on the family dynasty.

Our thoughts are also very much with the families of Ben Porcelli and Graeme Duncan. Ben was a great buddy of Johnny’s and they had always spent a lot of time together both in and out of school. Graeme, who now resides in France, had been a close friend of Colin’s since their schooldays and was back in Lanark on holiday.

We are thankful for the overwhelming number of messages of support we have received from all around the world. Colin was very much an inspiration and role model to motorsport fans the world over.

As you can imagine this is a very difficult time for the family and we would ask that our privacy be respected and we be allowed to grieve in private.”

Mystery Money in Japan

TOKYO (AFP) - A mystery gripping Japan over anonymous cash gifts has taken a new twist. For those who want the next batch of giveaways, the place to look is in their mailboxes -- or even right at their feet.

Residents of a Tokyo apartment building are baffled after a total of 1.81 million yen (15,210 dollars) was found in 18 mailboxes by Saturday, a police spokesman said.

"The money was in identical plain envelopes, which were unsealed and carried no names or messages," the spokesman told AFP.

But residents became "spooked" rather than pleased with the anonymous gifts -- and were too upright to pocket the money secretly.

"Some people initially suspected they were fake bills. When they realised the bills were real, they reported them to us," the spokesman said.

The predominantly middle-class apartment building in Tokyo is not alone. An envelope with one million yen was left in the mailbox of a 31-year-old woman in the western city of Kobe on Wednesday.

Police admit they have no idea who is leaving the cash -- whether a few people are behind the bizarre giveaways or if Japan is witnessing a craze of copycat benevolence.

Since June, dozens of city halls and other public buildings across the country have reported finding neatly packaged envelopes full of cash in men's restrooms.

The bathroom money has come with identical letters asking people to do good deeds -- leading to speculation that the benefactor may be a public servant trying to cheer up his profession or perhaps a member of a new-age religion.

Japanese cash dropoffs are not always so neat.

On Wednesday, bills worth 960,000 yen were inexplicably seen "falling" in front of a convenience store.

"We can just say the money came from the skies," a puzzled police official said. "There were other passers-by outside and customers in the store but the incident caused no confusion," he said.

"People thought it was too eerie to touch."

A man who contacted police saying his daughter had dropped the money had his claim rejected as groundless, the official said.

The largest single dropoff so far was in the ancient city of Kyoto on July 23, astonishing a 67-year-old woman who found an envelope containing 10 million yen of stacked bills in her mailbox.

But mystery money does not always reach police intact.

A woman walking on a bridge over Tokyo's Sumida River told officers that she saw bills falling at her feet from an elevated expressway above on July 6.

She believes 30 to 40 notes fell but police managed to collect only six notes worth 46,000 yen by the time they arrived.

"Some people were picking the money up on the bridge," the Tokyo Shimbun quoted the woman as saying.

No one can say if more people have collected money and not told police.

Media tallies suggest more than four million yen, including some found last year, has been found in the public restrooms.

Dutifully, police are holding most of the money in case the rightful owner eventually decides to reveal their identity.

Many residents of Gauteng woke up on Wednesday morning to a layer of snow turning lawns, rooftops and cars white, while the South African Weather Service predicted a freezing day with temperatures staying below eight degrees Celsius in Johannesburg.

Some Johannesburg residents phoned radio stations and told of waking up their children at 1am to play in the snow outside. Snow was reported on the East Rand, in Roodepoort and in Pretoria, while rooftops in Rosebank sparkled with a white layer early on Wednesday morning.

The cold snap also caused more power failures, with Bedfordview residents experiencing their third power failure in a matter of days.

Pretoria was the northern-most point of the snowfall, South African Weather Service forecaster Siyabonga Mthetwa told the Mail & Guardian Online on Wednesday morning. Snow like this last occurred in Gauteng on September 10 1981, he said.

No more snowfall is expected to fall in Gauteng, he added, as the weather system is on its way out to sea.

Early-morning temperatures in the province are likely to fall sharply on Thursday, the weather service said. Daytime temperatures, however, are expected to recover gradually from Thursday onwards.

In the Free State, Bloemfontein had already seen sleet falling by lunchtime on Tuesday with temperatures hovering at about three degrees Celsius. Various places in central and southern Free State reported snow and sleet, and in Lady Grey in the Eastern Cape snow had started to fall at about 11.30am on Tuesday. It was still snowing by late afternoon. "It's a fairyland, our own Alps," said resident Johan Hattingh.

Snowfalls were also reported from Rhodes, Sterkspruit, Aliwal North, Tarkastad and Barkly East.
